The Annual Maracas Open Water Classics hosted by the Amateur Swimming Association of Trinidad and Tobago and sponsored by Subway took place this Sunday 17th September at Maracas Bay, St Joseph, Trinidad. The Open Water Championships accommodated over 300 participants for the event.
Members of the Tobago YMCA Aqua Warriors who competed in the event took part in the 5000-meter and the 1000-meter events.
In the 5000 meter which started at 8 a.m. on Sunday morning saw two Aqua Warriors swimmers taking the podium place spots. Rochelle Pierre placed 7th overall in the Women’s 5000-meter race category with a final time of 1:33:22 and her teammate, first timer, Dante Williams placed 9th overall in the Men’s 5000-meter race category clocking an overall time of 1:20:23.
In the Youth 12 & Under 1000-meter event, the swimmers from the Tobago YMCA Aqua Warriors had some very honourable swims with first timer Abrisse Trim placing 4th in the Girls 12 & Under 1000-meter event clocking a time of 20:36. Teammate Jacob Cox placed 5th in the Boys 12 & Under 1000-meter event clocking a time of 18:06 whilst brother Joseph Cox placed 7th in the same said event clocking a final time of 18:25.
In the Boy’s 13 & Over 1000-meter event, the lone first time open water swimmer, Justin Thomas, placed 19th overall in a field of 42 competitors clocking a final time of 20:45.
The team of six from the Tobago YMCA Aqua Warriors though small, braved the waves and coarse seas of Maracas Bay and the Subway Maracas Open Water Swim Championships against all competitors to prevail victorious.
